Morphomatica is a user friendly computer programme
designed and written for the morphometric analysis of ostracod outlines.
It was developed during 2001 – 2007 by
J.
Linhart, W. Brauneis and W. Neubauer (University of Salzburg) using
the biological background of Dan. L. Danielopol (Austrian Academy of
Sciences).
The version "Morphomatica 1.6.1" is especially useful for
comparative studies of ostracod valves with few landmarks.
For the mathematical description of the ostracod outlines "Morphomatica"
uses an original solution, the so-called "Linhart algorithm",
based on a B-spline method.
The computer programme is free for
download. It is supplemented
by a detailed User Manual/Tutorial (see “Berichte des
Institutes für Erdwissenschaften, Karl-Franzens-Universität
Graz, Band 13“) and the Exercises 0, 1 and 2.
Master Thesis on this subject:
“Measuring the difference of approximating B-spline curves with application in distinguishing Ostracoda” (prepared during 2006/2007) by W. Neubauer under supervision of Prof. Dr. J. Linhart (University of Salzburg).
This thesis for a master’s degree in mathematics
describes the solutions used for the computation of outlines as well
as for disparity discrimination. The thesis offers new mathematical
solutions as compared to those presented in early versions of “Morphomatica”.
In an appendix the mathematical details of the computer programme are
presented.
